Why am I so thirsty all the time
Why am I so thirsty? The short answer is that you may be suffering from diabetes in on of its varying stages. The symptoms of diabetes slowly creep up, sometimes taking years to manifest on a significant level.
The number one sign of undiagnosed diabetes, type 1 or type 2 regardless, is severe thirst. As your bodies sugar levels get higher and higher. Your body in a last ditch effort to bring the levels down, will attempt to increase its level of liquid intake, this helps lower the sugar levels by literally flushing them out the system.
There is a terrible irony to this craving for liquid. As your body is less and less able to derive energy from food, or more to the point, from carbohydrate. It will attempt to up its engergy levels by craving even more food, since it acquires less and less from the food you have already eaten. So, what does it do? Demand more and more and not just any food but food that is quickly converted to glucose. Sugary drinks rank among the highest on the glycemic scale and since you will already be craving liquid, the chances are that the liquid you find yourself drinking will most likely be sugary fizzy drinks or fruit juices. This in turn will raise your glucose levels even more etc etc etc. Your body is basically taking over on a last ditch survival level and if left for too long it can get serious.
This craving for liquid is a short lived solution because not only is it not particularly effective but also your body will lose a lot of essential minerals and vitamins as well, your weight will almost certainly plummet as your body starts to cannibalise in an even more severe attempt to get energy and it will only be a matter of time before serious complications arise. Drastically risen sugar levels will cause the body to go into meltdown and at that point if nothing is done about it, coma and death is not unheard of.
These are wild and frightening statements but the importance of not leaving diabetes undiagnosed cannot be over emphasized. If you are in any doubt about feeling constantly thirsty, book an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible
